Meltham Mills Engineering of Huddersfield has seen savings of £20,000 and new business worth £500,000 as a direct result of involvement in the On-Machine Measurement programme.
Manufacturers of gears and transmission parts for companies such as JCB and Rexroth, Meltham Mills wanted to reduce set-up times on one of its three machining centres.
Renishaw, an On-Machine supporter company and provider of industrial metrology and spectroscopy solutions, was invited to discuss ways to resolve Meltham Mills’ measurement issues.
This led to the offer of a short term loan from Renishaw of a MP10 spindle probe which, by identifying the position of the workpiece, automatically updates work offsets and enables parts to be made to specification first time.
This eliminated the need for expensive jigs and fixtures.
According to Steve Alcock, Works Manager at Meltham Mills:
“Customers are happy to pay us for machining time on their gears, and the probe means they don't have to spend more on jigs and fixtures. It has already paid for itself three times over and saved us £20,000. As a result we have taken on a new job worth £500,000 a year.”
