Measurement saves money with new resistor test

Strict safety and quality controls require resistors to be tested beyond their
maximum voltage before they are sold.

On-Machine Measurement, on behalf of the National Measurement System, helped a UK firm find the right testing expertise to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

HVR Manufacturing MeasurementJarrow-based HVR International, which makes high-voltage ceramic carbon resistors for global markets, needed to replace ageing test equipment with something more robust and reliable.

On-Machine Measurement, on behalf of the NMS, helped identify Swiss experts Haefely Test AG, represented in the UK by HTT (UK) Ltd., which tailored its high-voltage impulse test system to inspect the integrity and quality of HVR’s resistors.

A demonstration of the Haefely equipment showed a potential 67% reduction in HVR’s test time, about £250,000 worth of increased capacity and a £25,000 cut in manufacturing costs.
The new equipment also demonstrated significant reliability improvements and a more productive use of staff time.

It was calculated that the cost and efficiency benefits of the new measurement equipment would be repaid inside three years.

Quick facts

Specialist measurement equipment is required to test high-voltage resistors before export and sale

More efficient measurement reduces test time, increases capacity and reliability, and cuts manufacturing costs.
